I work at the world famous Museum of Science and Industry and for years several residents of the neighborhood (Hyde Park) have claimed to see the ghost of Clarence Darrow walking across the steps of our South entrance.
Mr. Darrow was a famed labor turned criminal lawyer in the late 1800’s through 1938. He represented several high profile defendants of that era (Leopold and Loeb and John T. Scopes of “The Monkey Trial” fame to name a few.) He was also a very prominent figure in Chicago and even has a bridge dedicated to him behind the Museum.
Every year on Mr. Darrow’s birthday a group of Hyde Park residents and Chicago lawyers hold a small reception at the Museum that ends with the placing of a wreath into the lagoon off the Darrow Bridge. Then, they wait for him to make an appearance.
To this day, he’s been a no show. But, we Chicagoans always have hope for next year.
