The Toilet Manager of Bath

Those local "mayors" of your town. The ones that every knows, the odd balls that roam your streets.

The Toilet Manager of Bath

When I worked in Bath, UK we had the 'Toilet Manager'. This was a chap in his 50s who dressed in a sharp, if old-fashioned suit, carrying a briefcase who every day would arrive outside the public toilets on the road where my office was based. He'd stand there all day, briefcase in hand, as if standing guard by the door of the toilets. He never went in, never stopped anyone going in, or never made any contact with anyone using the toilet. At the end of the work day, he'd march off again.

Eventually he was asked to move on and so took up a post outside of the local pizza hut, doing exactly the same but with a slightly pissed off expression on his face that he wasn't allowed to stand outside his beloved loos.

I say, years ago this man was scheduled to meet his sweetheart at that spot, but when the time came she never showed. Now he waits everyday, hoping it was only something that came up that stopped her from showing and that maybe she'll be there anyday.

Or maybe he's just insane. But...same thing.

That's actually quite romantic. I'd like to think it's true.

"The Toilet Manager of Bath" may be the best sentence I have read all day.

Oh man, that depressed me a little bit.

But realizing the awesomness of "The Toilet Manager of Bath", as mentioned below, cheered me up again.
