Mayfield Dairy Farms

In grocery stores throughout the southeast, you can find milk that comes in a bright yellow jug. This magical stuff is Mayfield's milk, and it is hands down the best milk I have ever tasted. I first encountered it when my grandparents moved to Athens, TN, and it put to shame the milk available in my hometown in West Virginia. Shortly after that though, my family ended up moving to Knoxville, where I could have all the Mayfield's milk and ice cream I wanted. They even have a dairy in Athens that offers tours and a gift shop (I have 3 different Mayfield t-shirts).

A few years ago I moved to Manhattan, and the one thing I could never adjust to was the lack of Mayfield products. The only good milk I ever found there was at the Ronnybrook Dairy shop in Chelsea Market. One day a friend and I were on the train and I mentioned that I needed to stop by there to get some milk, because it was the only thing that came close to Mayfield's, and a woman sitting nearby said, "Excuse me, were you just talking about the Mayfield Dairy? I miss their milk so much!" It turned out she was also from Knoxville, and although she had lived in New York for years, she still constantly lamented having no access to her beloved Mayfield Dairy products. My friend could only laugh while this stranger and I bonded over the desire to get our hands on a gallon of Mayfield's skim milk and a pint of Moose Tracks.

Now I live back in Knoxville and although there are plenty of tasty things I miss from New York, I have to say, being able to get Mayfield milk again more than makes up for it.

Our neighbors to the north (Canada) can buy milk in a bag.

That's it. Milk in a bag.

I saw that in a Kids in the Hall sketch when I was in high school and it blew my mind! It was so much crazier looking than the "Jug O' Milk" from Weigel's (a chain of local convenience stores), or the Mayfield yellow jug. Side by side, there's really no comparison:

You say it's the best tasting milk ever? Now I am curious. New Hampshire has a lot of dairy farms, so we know our milk. In fact...my high school had a barn right there on the campus, with cows and sheep and what not. You could learn a lot of things such as "Watch Where you step" and "Which Class Rooms Are Down Wind From the Cows". It was great.

Well, it's definitely the best milk I have tasted, but I have to admit, the number of states I've sampled dairy products in is fairly small (Someday I'll hit them all. Someday...). But I have to say, there is something truly great about the Mayfield milk. The skim tastes richer than most 2%, I tell you! I don't know how they do it! Magic cows, maybe?

I also feel like I should say that I am in no way affiliated with the Mayfield Dairy. Just a fan. I swear this isn't a Chewlie's Gum kind of thing.

I LOVE Mayfield milk. We're just far enough north that some stores have it and some do not. But we go to Gatlinburg every year (usually in March) and my husband gets Mayfield milk and I get a Dr. Enuf soda, which I can only find in one store in Gatlinburg.

When I was a kid, some parts of Louisville still had milk men and we got our milk and our Orange juice in bags, delivered to our door every monday.

You have excellent taste in beverages. Mayfield milk and Dr. Enuf? Those are some of the finest products East Tennessee has to offer!
