Hot dogs? Oh man...
Back in Ontario, where i'm from in Canada, there's a small port town on the edge of Lake Erie called Port Dover.
Dover is famous for an old legendary take out joint known as 'The Arbor'. The Arbor has remained open for over 75 years,
through several generations, and a World War. While they do serve burgers, and fries, the Arbor is mainly known for it's
incredible hot dogs, and a drink known as the 'Glow'.
The thing that makes the Arbor hot dog stand head and shoulders above the rest is the face that they steam their dogs, as
opposed to boiling them. The condiments also add to the whole experience with everything ranging from Corn relish, Shredded Carrots, to Fried Mushrooms, and Horse radish. The Arbor dog is also an oversized footlong, meaning you're lucky if you can get one down your gullet.
What better beverage to wash down an Arbor dog, but a 'Golden Glow'. As the story goes, once they began to roll with the hotdog stand, they realized the people needed a cold bevvy to beat the heat, and help the hotdogs go down. They came up with the 'Golden Glow', which is basically Orange juice/Syrup, served in a cup with crushed ice. I don't know what else they put in there to make it go down so nice, but the taste always takes me back.
At the end of highschool/start of Uni, we would often head down to Dover on a Friday night to see the sight, and grab a dog. We would manage to improve on the recipe of the Golden Glow with a fifth of Vodka, and then it was off to the Lighthouse Pier to finish the dogs, and feel a little 'Golden Glow'.
I've been back to Dover in the last few years, and the Arbor remains. The experience is not the same as it was in my youth,
but the food can still take me back to some great memories.
BTW There's a joint here in Korea that puts Kimchi (Pickled Cabbage) on their dogs, and believe it or not, it's DAMN good.
Thanks for letting me share - TBone in Korea
