Midnight Movies ... what's it all about?

I was watching the local news and it dawned on me ... when was the first midnight movie or where did this phenomena come from? I participated in Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Transformers (although some j'hole actually had an 9 and 10 PM Thursday opening), Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions, Lord of the Rings (Two Towers & Return of the King), and that's all I can recall right now.
