I was just in Tulsk, County Roscommon, Ireland, and discovered the Entrance to Hell. It has a history that goes way back (possibly 3,000-1,000 BC), and it may be tied to the ancient people who built the mounds, ringforts and walls in the area...which are associated with the Warrior Goddess Queen Maeb. The earthenwork hill down the road is considered of equal importance to pre-Christian Ireland as the Hill of Tara.
The Entrance to Hell title was put out there by the Christian world to discourage any pagan involvement with the cave. Before that, it was the Entrance to the Underworld or Otherworld. It also goes by "Cave of the Cats" and Oweynagat Cave.
I climbed inside and was quite amazed. You can read my TravelBlog account at http://irishfireside.wordpress.com/2008 ... mon-boyle/
I also did a short podcast about my descent into "Hell" at
